Although the phenomenon exists in other places around the world, the bioluminescence of Puerto Rico possesses some unique attributes that make viewing it a completely different experience for everyone.
Puerto Rico is home to what are often cited as the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world. Paddling through waters filled with microscopic plankton leave trails of glittering light in your wake.
You don’t have to travel far off the beaten trail to witness the miracle of Puerto Rican bioluminescence. Get up close and personal with one of nature’s most incredible light shows when you book a guided kayak tour.
The presence of Puerto Rico’s mangrove forests plays a crucial role in supporting necessary conditions for high concentrations of dinoflagellates, the organisms that emit light. The shallow, sheltered bays allow these creatures to thrive in a contained environment.
How many tours let you kayak at night through a swirl of magical light eddies? Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent displays make for one-of-a-kind experiences you and your family will remember forever.
During this fascinating and advanced tour, we’ll seek out some of El Yunque Rainforest’s gems and explore a different zone of the Forest. You will see and experience rivers, waterfalls and walk through natural trails.
The initial hike/walk is a 25-30 minute journey up a dirt/rock path with some river wading. This trail is surrounded by bamboo trees, rain-forest flowers, and many other beautiful plants. We will first visit a collecting pool that forms at the base of a waterfall. Here you will have the opportunity to swim on it’s crystal clear waters, and enjoy the different tones of its deep pools. A glimpse at the first waterfall, great for pictures opportunities!
The adventure finishes in a pool area, its best kept secret. After a few minutes of hiking and climbing boulders (more intense), arrive at a natural river where you can swim, swing from a rope to the river, and enjoy the natural water slides (optional, once you climb the rocks must finish it).
